BOOKS ON TUXEDO PARK or BY AUTHORS WHO LIVED THERE
Recommendations from our Tuxedo Park History curator, Margaret Fitzgibbon Watson, Class of '68

Polar the Titanic Bear by Daisy Corning Stone Spedden, Little Brown and Co. This is a children's book that can also be enjoyed by adults. It has some nice pictures and references to Tuxedo Park. It is a true story about a little boy who grew up in Tuxedo Park and survived the Titanic. His house was on Wee Wah Lake (across from Tuxedo Club). Sr. Lawrence once took us ice-skating there and it was like being in a Currier & Ives print. There are new and used copies available on Amazon.
Tuxedo Park-The Historic Houses-Christian R. Sonne Chastellux, Lindley Hall and our Auditorium/Gym are featured. Amazon has it new/used starting at $49. The Tuxedo Park Historical Society has new copies for $85.

Tuxedo Park- A Journal of Recollections by Albert Foster Winslow - 1992 New and used copies available at Amazon. From Google Books: This rich, anecdotal history of the unique community of Tuxedo Park in New York's Hudson Valley captures its special flavor with just the right mixture of detailed history & charming lore. Pierre Lorillard founded this sporting preserve for the social elite of New York City in 1886. The handiwork of 1,300 European workers created a Tuxedo Park that looms large in the social annals of the decades. Albert Winslow, who came to Tuxedo in 1914, weaves a tapestry of sports, architecture, local custom & personality. Notables such as Mark Twain, Emily Post, Averell Harriman, Harry S. Truman, Babe Ruth & others travel through the streets. A bygone era of style & grace is celebrated & captured in this fully illustrated, beautifully designed volume. View glittering social functions (where in fact the "tuxedo" was first named), sporting events, from golf, court tennis, riding & hunting to boating & architectural landmarks. Many of the grand houses & gardens were designed by such renowned talents as McKim Mead & White, Bruce Price & Whitney Warren. To order write the Tuxedo Historical Society, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987.
Tuxedo Park-Lives, Legacies, Legends-Chiu Yin Hempel Amazon has new copies (no used) and seems to be the only one who has it. Expensive ($80) but interesting. (From Amazon: "focuses on the individuals and families who created Tuxedo Park, the sylvan Hudson Valley enclave that was for decades synonymous with economic influence and upper-class living.
